How to be Authentic on Social Media

What makes showing people who we truly are so scary? I, like many others hide behind filters and nice post in order to create an illusion of a tidy and respectable lifestyle. Truth be told, this has been one of the most dismantling times of my life. Part of that may be reflected in some of my content but be rest assured, I keep it at a minimum. Perhaps that’s why I’m not as relatable as more successful bloggers. Halfway through the year, I’m working on being more authentic when I’m posting on social media.

A few things that I’m considering is posting honest content. Prior to posting anything on social media, I considered how people within my personal life would dissect what I was writing and either make it about them or judge me for it. Either way, creating content from that perspective stifles authenticity. Your content becomes driven by everyone but you. Your voice isn’t your own but the voice of your employer, family members, and friends.

Please understand, you should post responsibly especially since now your social media presence is viewed more than your resume. You should also take into consideration how your words/content can affect those who are close to you. But if you’re as genuine in your day to day life, anything that you say shouldn’t be that jarring.

When creating content, it’s helpful to keep in mind exactly why you’re posting. Is it an outlet for you, are you trying to find your people, or is your goal to help someone by sharing your life experiences? For me, it’s all three. I’ve always embraced social distancing so if I can find my tribe via the internet, that’s fine with me. Writing is certainly a creative outlet for me and I truly enjoy helping others.

If you want a more authentic presence try doing some of the following.

  • Keep in mind why you’re posting content and stay loyal to that.
  • Have a clear understanding of what your target audience wants from you.
  • Remember that the heart reaches the heart. Be genuine.
  • Don’t stifle your creativity by being someone you’re not.
  • Consider others but don’t be afraid to be open and honest. You never know how your words may affect someone’s life.

When you begin being more honest with your content, it becomes less stressful to create. The process actually becomes more enjoyable and fluid.
